Evaluative report

Previously, I have been reading a lot of graphics magazines or books to get inspiration for my work. It is a good way of learning. However, this could indirectly influence one’s working style by adapting ideas from the resources. In this period of time, I have learnt to think a lot more different and develop various new ways of working on my own.

In the Hybrid project, I have introduced a quite interesting book binding method from the traditional ones. It is so much different from those I did before. It was not only functional, but in another way it was made to interact with the users. I have combined different elements and skills that I have used in the previous to generate something fresh and new.

It is not an easy job to finish each piece of work within a short period of time. It is necessary to think fast but having the idea thoroughly determined. Because there would not be time for you to keep on trying and experimenting until the idea could actually be applicable. It is true that practicing is important.

In the project ‘Make something really big’, there is a very short time provided to produce an unedited video. It offered an opportunity to train the brainstorming skills. I have learnt to make use of any resources that I could easily find, such as a hair dryer, torch, paper and strings around, to produce different features, environment and audio effect for the film.

It is sometimes difficult to produce a work that is creative whilst functional for actual use. For example, in the Camberwell Arts Festival project, besides the design of the advertisement, the properties of the work, the cost of production and availability of materials in the actual situation are also considerable. However, I have left out the part of considering the weather condition that the rain could damage the paper made sculpture. That is what I have learnt that how detail a design have to be determined.

In the group project, it was a pretty nice experience for me. I enjoyed spending time with the group, sharing ideas and working together. It is sometimes hard to compromise among a large group of people as each people got their own idea and view of point. In a way, it is a good opportunity to know more about myself and others. By working individually, you would not have noticed your shortcoming in working. In a group, I have learnt to take judgment from others by reflecting after work whilst improve my communication skills by knowing how to express myself. It is important to develop a unique working style as an artist. However, in the commercial aspect, it is necessary to understand the need of the customers, to cope with the working environment and to have good communication skills to work with other colleagues.

Overall, I think I have improved in several aspects, such as thinking wider, being more creative and developing better interaction skills with others. But I still have to work on time management and to think of backup plans that not all ideas would have worked well or applicable as expected.

Personal Project

I have finalized the topic of my personal project as the person who means the most to me in my life. I have planned to make a portrait of the person by white  pins on white board.

The ‘white on white’ concept is to demonstrate the feel of being in a dream or a fantasy, which tempts you to chase after it to get a closer view and a clearer, stronger vision. You would wonder the existence or the detailed appearance of this person. The portrait is made in different angles to provide the viewer a space to think over. People would try to remind themselves or refresh their memory about the  appearance of the person by assembling every views they remembered.

Unfortunately, the project didn’t go as plan. Therefore, the idea have been altered by using some purple pins on the white board. The theme of the project remains unchanged. I have used simply a smiling face of the person to demonstrate the happiness that everyone would have dreamt of in their lifetime. The purple pins – being the favourite colour the person – were used instead of the white pins to characterize the person. The pins were neatly pinned onto the board.  Under the light, the pins have produced a shadow of face of the person on the board, which is quite interesting to look at.

Hybrid

A hybrid is the combination of two or more different things, aimed at achieving a particular objective or goal.

In deciding the title/topic of the book, I considered to work on the kind of books that only few people would read. So I have chosen to produce a book about ‘ astronomy ‘. The book is aimed to attract those who dislike or are tired and scared of reading wordy books or content with series of theories and descriptions, as well as to attract people in their first sight and get them interested in the subject.

The book is specially bound, like a telescope with an ‘eyepiece’ (a transparent hole) at the front cover, which the book can be pulled apart and readers can look through the eyepiece. In between the book, it is hollow which acts like a series of frames. There are pages of photo films – pictures of stardust or star clusters printed on clear acetate, which the reader can insert the films to or remove from the book. As the book is purposed to be read in the dark, there is another transparent hole at the book back cover which is used for the lighting setup. The lighting was set for illumination like the moonlight. The number of films inserted or overlapping of the films can affect the amount of light that pass through the films creating different effects, such as the darkness of the universe, the amount of star clusters that can be seen and the stars in layers with different distance.

Overall, the book works to offer a ‘genuine’ experience to the reader so as to raise their interest in astronomy initially. It combines a number of elements involving astronomy within the book, i.e. telescope, night scene of the universe with stars, etc. With only a small hole shown at the front cover, the idea of the design tends to gain people’s attention and curiosity to pick up the book and see what it is all about. I think it is always a good idea to start off looking at pictures or make things look more fun, and gradually trigger the people to start reading about the subject more in depth.

Camberwell Arts Festival

The main concept is come from a simple/common gesture – raise your hand or put your hands up. It is well understood by most of the people that raising a hand can convey hello, welcome, use in an audience when one wish to speak or be recognized, and as a sign of participation.

i am trying to give a strong and direct message to the public to get involved in the festival with this concept.

The raising palm looks like leaves of a tree, therefore I start to develop my whole idea putting those palms on the tree. With the palms as the leaves of the tree, it conveys the message of welcoming everyone to participate in the festival. The hand is drawn in a cartoon style, to make it as iconic as possible. A small tree sculpture is constructed to symbolize camberwell as an environmentally friendly area with parks and plants, giving a warm and cosy greet to the public and gather up the people in one place – camberwell. The palms in another hand are small leaflets with information about the festival, which people can take off.

Besides, I have also considered the production cost and material to be used. The tree is aimed to be constructed by wasted paper or cardboard, in a way to be environmental friendly as well as cheap production. However, the problem could be the damage caused by rain or misbehave of the people. This could be improved.

In general, this whole concept is trying to attract the people to the festival by producing something new, different and interesting, rather than simply designing a leaflet or poster.

Make something really big

At the time I am thinking of idea to produce the film, my friend was playing with some paper script and folded a paper plane. He then threw the plane to me and all of a sudden it inspired me. When the plane flew towards me, I have visualized a series of quick shoot of the plane flashing in my mind getting bigger and bigger.

In producing the video (unedited), I have produced a number of paper planes in different sizes and hang them onto the ceiling in a straight line from small to big. The video is filmed in the dark together with the audio, which is made from a hair dryer to act like the running sound of the plane engine. The flashing of the light is made by a torch, representing the flashing of headlight of the plane and the flashing picture of the plane that I visualized.

ACME

The idea of the design of the poster come from the nature of trees growing. The theory of growing a tree is started by watering the seeds and providing sufficient sunlight and fertilizers after some roots and leafy grew. By continuous nourishment, roots grow stronger, trunk develops with branches and more leaves. After a period of time, the tree may blossom and fruit. I am using this concept to demonstrate the developing process and success of ACME. The root is the base and the understanding, the nourishment is the work force of the designer,  the growing process is the development of ACME, the fruits and blossoms are the success and production of ACME fonts.

Shunt

Shunt

Before redesigning for Shunt, I have first visited Shunt’s webpage (http://www.shunt.co.uk/) and think of what could be improved. In my personal view, I think the logo of shunt does not appear to be impressive or sharp enough to attract people. Besides, i think the typeface and fonts of the webpage doesn’t well match its logo. Also, the website is not as functional/directive that the site is not well organized and there is lack of communication between shunt, the website and the visitors.

Therefore, I have decided to reestablish/improve the logo, business card and the website of Shunt to make it more remarkable and easier to function.

The logo of shunt is built up by a number of small rounded circles. The idea of the circle come from the spotlight in which to highlight its existence  to the  public. It also expresses the success of shunt and each of the artists in the pasting years, like people performing on a stage under the spotlight.

Besides, I have tried to link the business card of the artist with shunt and the website, enhancing the function of a business card rather than simply a thick paper script with personal details and contacts. There is a code (the small circles) on each of the cards, which come from splitting the logo of shunt into 10 parts for the 10 artists respectively. People can get to the artist’s personal page  from the home page of shunt directly with the code.

The website is redesigned. My idea of the webpage is to provide a modern and clearer site which is more user friendly. The subjects/subtitle in the site is reorganized and reformatted, which is easier for people to direct from one page to another. The site is made to be more attractive, interesting and communicative, such as adding a drawing tool for people to suggest their idea and developing a more modern viewing system for the photo gallery. I think it is always important to provide a medium of communication to let the public/visitors get involved.
